Mushroom Garden: Where Cosmic Geometry Meets the Forest Floor
When I first hung my artwork at Kaladi Coffee—a local coffee roaster in Englewood, Colorado—I had no idea it would lead to something entirely new.
The paintings were simply there to be seen, quietly occupying their space on the wall while people passed through their day. Coffee shops have a certain energy about them: conversations unfolding, ideas brewing, people pausing for a moment before continuing on. I loved the thought that my work could exist within that rhythm.
One day I received a phone call from a man named Dylan.
He told me he had seen my paintings at Kaladi and was immediately drawn to them. What caught his attention was the surreal quality of the work—the way the colors and forms felt a little psychedelic, a little cosmic, and deeply rooted in sacred geometry.
One painting in particular stood out to him. A piece I had created called Harmony Portal.
He loved the structure and the feeling of the piece, but he imagined it in a completely different color story. Something brighter. More electric. So he asked a question that artists both hope for and slightly fear:
“Do you ever make custom paintings?”
Being someone who enjoys a challenge, my immediate thought was—why not?
And just like that, I said yes.
This would be my first commissioned painting, and the excitement of it felt like stepping into new creative territory. A few days later we spoke again to talk through the details. I asked about color, scale, and what kind of energy he hoped the piece would hold.
He told me he loved the long 48x12 format—something bold and panoramic.
For color, he wanted it to pop. Neon greens. Lime tones. A deep royal purple—“like the Crown Royal bags,” he said. The overall feeling he envisioned was cosmic, something with a space or galactic theme.
Then he added one more request.
“Could you put some mushrooms in it?”
As someone who feels deeply connected to nature, the answer came easily. Hell Yeah!
With that direction in mind, I began the process.
The background emerged first, layered slowly to build that sense of depth and atmosphere—the feeling of looking out into something expansive and otherworldly. The neon greens and royal purples began to interact across the canvas like light moving through space.
Once the field of color felt alive, I began introducing the geometry.
Sacred structures appeared gradually: circles intersecting, patterns unfolding, forms hovering within the cosmic landscape. The mushrooms found their place naturally within the composition, grounding the piece in something both earthly and mystical at the same time.
I spent several days immersed in the painting, refining the balance between structure and atmosphere.
And somewhere along the way, something unexpected happened.
I loved the piece so much that I felt compelled to create another.
Then another.
What started as a single commission began to expand into an entire series—each painting exploring that same interplay between geometry, cosmic color, and organic forms.
Looking ahead, I would love to see these works evolve even further—perhaps becoming tapestries or larger installations that allow the patterns and colors to live in entirely new ways.
But it all began with that moment at Kaladi Coffee.
A painting on a wall.
A phone call from a stranger.
And the simple willingness to say yes to a new creative path.
